Sixteen years ago, Harry Styles walked onto a television stage as a 16-year-old from Cheshire with a microphone, a song and a part-time job at a bakery. He was still years away from becoming the singer whose name would eventually fill arenas around the world.

Now, as his 30-show Madison Square Garden residency reaches its final weekend, Styles has returned to that teenager in a way few fans could have expected. Instead of simply choosing another Halloween costume, he brought one of the earliest chapters of his life back to the stage.

On Friday night, the first of two Harryween shows at Madison Square Garden, Styles changed into the outfit he wore for his 2010 X Factor audition. He then performed Stevie Wonder's “Isn't She Lovely,” the same song that helped carry him through the audition years earlier.

For a few minutes, the distance between the teenager hoping for a chance and the global star standing inside Madison Square Garden seemed to disappear. The boy who once needed judges to decide his future was now performing for thousands of people who had already chosen to be there for him.

Harry Styles Is Closing His Madison Square Garden Residency With Harryween

Styles' Together, Together residency began at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 26 and was scheduled to run for 30 shows through Oct. 31. The New York residency became the only U.S. stop on his 2026 tour and marked the largest number of shows he would perform at a single venue during the run.

The final two concerts on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31 were billed as Harryween shows, giving the residency a Halloween ending. Friday's performance became the penultimate night, while Saturday marked the final concert of the run.

But the costume Styles chose for Friday night gave the closing weekend a meaning that went beyond Halloween. He was not simply dressing up as someone famous, he was revisiting the person he had been before fame found him.

He Started the Night as Elvis, Then Went Back to Himself

Styles began the evening dressed as Elvis Presley, wearing a white jumpsuit, cape and gold sunglasses. His band and dancers also joined the theme, appearing as different versions of Styles from throughout his career.

Then the show took an unexpected turn.

Styles changed into the outfit from his teenage X Factor audition. Instead of becoming another famous character, he became an earlier version of himself.

That distinction made the costume different from his previous Harryween appearances. For one night, the Halloween character was not Dorothy, Danny Zuko or Elvis Presley.

It was Harry Styles at 16.

The Audition Did Not Immediately Make Him a Star

Looking back at Styles' rise, it can be easy to forget that his future was not guaranteed.

His solo journey on The X Factor eventually ended before the competition was over. But the judges saw enough potential in Styles to place him into a new group with Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik.

That group became One Direction.

The decision changed the lives of all five teenagers. For Styles, it became the first major step in a career that would eventually take him far beyond the television competition where the story began.

The Residency Was About More Than One Halloween Weekend

The Harryween shows may have provided the most memorable images from the final weekend, but they were only the conclusion of a much larger run.

Styles' Together, Together residency brought him to Madison Square Garden for 30 performances across more than two months. The venue became a temporary home for a performer who had already spent years moving between countries, arenas and increasingly larger stages.

That makes the final weekend feel like more than the end of another concert series. It closes a chapter.

And Styles chose to close it by looking back.

Harry Styles Ended the Residency by Looking Back

Styles' final Harryween show brought his Madison Square Garden residency to a close on Oct. 31. Whatever else happened during the final night, the previous evening had already provided one of the most personal moments of the entire run.

For one night, Styles did not need to become Elvis. He did not need to become Dorothy or Danny Zuko.

He simply became the teenager who once walked into an X Factor audition wearing those clothes and hoping for a chance.

The difference was that this time, he knew where the story had taken him.

From a bakery in Cheshire to Madison Square Garden, the distance between those two versions of Harry Styles is the story. And for a few minutes on a Halloween stage, he brought them together.
